How to get rid of dry itchy scalp natural hair?

How to Go Natural Gently

One variant of psoriasis appears on the scalp. Depending on your skin tone, they can be reddish or salmon-toned with white scales, or dark purple with gray scales. The patches can extend across the entire breadth of the head, or appear solely on the hairline, forehead, behind the ears or back of the neck. Scalp psoriasis can drive you crazy because of its proximity to your hair roots. Naturally, for some, this results in extreme itching. Severity ranges from mild discomfort to itchy, thick, crusted sores that affect one’s sleep and every day life.

Psoriasis is a pain, and when it’s on your head, it’s like you can never get it off your mind! (Pun intended). When you want to approach psoriasis naturally but struggle with a flaking scalp, the best approach is a blended one.

Always be gentle with your body. Attempting rapid change by switching all your products overnight will present new problems. It can muddle the results of the new product you have lined up, and leave you really frustrated. Instead, make changes one small step at a time, giving your body time to get used to it.

Shampoo hair with lukewarm water

Gentle washes with broad, firm strokes using the pads of the fingers allows you to cleanse thoroughly without irritating the skin. Using lukewarm water is the gentlest for the skin, both on the head and on the rest of the body.

Don’t scratch to loosen those flakes

If you are stopping use of over-the-counter gels that help you loosen those flakes, itching might resurge. Sweat likes to linger on the scalp. Skin under constant humidity gets irritated fast, easily turning red, blotchy and inflamed. It is tempting to just rub away that sensation. But scratching to relieve itching, burning or stinging can bring a host of new problems, including wounds and scarring. When sweat and dirt accumulate near hair follicles, the risk of getting an infected wound is high. Try using a scalp brush in the shower to loosen up the skin, and gently remove accumulated psoriasis scales. Experiment with natural oils to soften the skin by leaving it on for an hour before bathing. But if the itching interrupts precious shut-eye, it’s important to go back to what works—losing sleep in order to go natural will weaken your immune system and can make the psoriasis worse all over again. Do what you need to do without jeopardizing the other parts of your life that are fundamental to your overall health.

Examine your lifestyle and diet

Life and dietary adjustments make a real impact. Examining the diet to reduce common inflammatory triggers is a great first step. So is reducing stress, getting enough sleep, ensuring your body has the right store of vitamins and minerals, and getting adequate exercise.

Use natural shampoo for everyday washes

A super effective change to your routine is changing your shampoo. However, the scalp’s sensitive nature often needs targeted treatment. If you’ve been using dermatologist-recommended shampoos or spot treatments for your psoriasis, don’t stop immediately. Maintain your weekly use of 3% coal tar or salicylic acid treatment and change your regular shampoo to a natural one that’s free of harsh cleansers like sodium lauryl sulfate.

Test it out. Does the hair feel soft, and does your scalp feel good? Keep going. If your scalp is itchy or seems to be feeling heavy and grimy, try something different. When switching to a natural shampoo, the gentler cleansing power can make your head feel a bit greasier than before. This is normal. Natural shampoo fans often cite a switch away from drugstore products as the start to becoming conditioner-free! Natural shampoos help retain more of the hair’s natural oils. After 1 - 2 months, the hair often takes on a brighter, sleeker appearance.

Our Baden | Moisturizing Shampoo Bar has a delectable lavendar and peppermint scent. Made with wheatgerm, sunflower and coconut oil, it softens hair and cleanses both scalp and beard without stripping natural oils. It's mildly antibacterial despite being vegan, leaves a soft lather.

Gentle Moisturizers

Applying moisturizer to the hairline, backs of ears, back of neck, softens irritated skin that's dry and exposed. Creams, balms and salves are all good options, depending on your preference for consistency.

The products found in our Psoriasis collection can be applied anywhere on the body, including the edges of the hairline. We especially love the Bestseller Relief | Psoriasis Duo.
