Differences in Body Moisturizers
What are the differences between Body Moisturizers?
Why do we need to moisturize our body?
Our skin is the largest barrier to infection that we have. It is the first layer of defense against bacteria and natural elements. In the process of life, water evaporates off of the skin. The skin also experiences stress from pollution, weather changes, and airborne dust.
Broadly speaking, moisturizers play two different types of roles.
The first is to assist the skin’s natural water retention by helping draw water to skin cells. Typically, products that contain high aqua content and formulated as serums, gels, or toners fall into this category.
The second is to act as a protective and moisturizing barrier. Oils, creams, and butters are typical examples of this type of skincare. Where the rich oils meet the skin, hydration and essential nutrients are provided. Where the oils meet air, a protective layer envelops the skin, shielding your body’s biggest organ from stressors in urbanity and nature.
When Should We Apply Body Moisturizers?
A general rule of thumb when applying moisturizing products for your face, is to start with light, high aqua content formulas first, and layer on higher oil content or cream formulas next.
For the skin on our body, which is thicker and less fine than the skin on the face— as it sheds dead skin layers less frequently— creamier moisturizers can be applied directly.
Body Lotion vs. Body Soufflé vs. Body Cream
All three products moisturize your skin by containing nutrient-rich vegan oils, but they differ in their oil to water ratio.
Body Lotion for quick hydration
Body Lotions are made with a combination of oil and water. Among the three, lotions contain the highest ratio of water.
As a result, they often glide on easily without needing to be melted with the hand's touch. They can give you a quick boost of hydration, but may need to be-reapplied throughout the day, especially after washing.
As a lighter formulation, Body Lotions are absorbed into the skin more quickly and offer more instant hydration.
For everyday use, to carry in your pocket or to leave at work, our Natural Body Lotions are ideal.
Body Soufflé for an airy protective layer
Body Soufflés are between a Body Cream and a Body Lotion in terms of consistency. They are created with oils and water, but have a higher oil ratio than body lotions.
Their oil and water consistency matches that of a body cream. However, body soufflés are light and more accessible than a heavy cream or solid butter.
Prior to packaging, the formula are whipped, adding air into the formulation. This allows the cream to feel extra light and luxurious upon application. For dry skin that needs an oil barrier but doesn't like the layer to be too thick, a body soufflé is the perfect solution.
Body Creams for a longer lasting barrier
Body Cream is formulated with the highest oil to water ratio. They’re thicker, but that just makes them ideal for tackling the stubborn dry spots on your body.
In Canada, long winters can get us down and make us irritated and itchy. Washing our hands in the dry winter under cold faucets further damages the top skin layer and creates redness.
Body Creams are extra moisturizing for individuals who need that super soothing finish. Rough, dry, cracked, chapped, or eczema-wracked skin will especially benefit from regular day and night application of Body Creams.
People who have a dry skin type will benefit from using body creams on problem areas.
Body Creams can be applied at any dry spots like heels, elbows, knees.
Common, day-to-day activities can dehydrate the skin. Going out in the sun, taking very hot baths, not drinking enough water, or being in an air-conditioned environment are all scenarios which commonly dehydrate our skin.
Dehydration of the skin is temporary. Dehydrated is not the same as dry skin which is a skin type— dry, oily, normal, combination— which are dermatological designations describing how skin may look and behave. Regardless of skin type, everyone’s skin can benefit from extra hydration.
All our products are vegan, lightweight, and super hydrating, leaving no long term chemical damage on your skin. See our Body Moisturizers.
