Treat Yourself Well this Winter and Blossom in Spring

During the winter season, your hands often start to look different. They appear older, more mottled in colouration, and show sharper wrinkles. As the edges of your cuticles dry up, its surface may feel scratchy and irritated. Sensitivities flare up. Your cheeks may look warm and flushed, but also feel raw and rough to the touch.

Cold weather evaporates moisture out of the skin. As the skin gets continually stripped of the essential water it needs, it shows signs of stress and underlying skin conditions get aggravated. Outdoor sports and day trips may leave your hands and other visible parts of the body feeling ragged.

High-humidity regions may leave your skin less prone to obvious signs of dryness, but the moisture content in the surrounding air leads to a deeper coldness, one that seeps into the body. Low-humidity geographical areas don’t feel as cold, but the signs on your body are obvious.

Regardless of where you live, switching to oil-based moisturizers for the winter is essential. The oils will coat the skin and provide protection from trans-epidermal water loss. In warmed, indoor spaces, adding moisture to your environment via a humidifier can help—but be sure to keep it warm inside, or you’ll feel the cooling temperatures right in your bones.

Adjust your Weekly Routine for Winter

  1. Slow down the exfoliation. Over-zealous peeling can leave dry skin feeling even drier. Harsh scrubs can damage your skin, causing moisture loss and ironically, even more dryness. Smooth out those tough, dry bits near the cuticles and extremities with gentle exfoliation no more than once a week. Moisturize richly afterwards to protect the exposed skin.
  2. Adjust shower frequency to your physical activity. Your lower overall body temperature means you’re sweating less. You’re less likely to smell awful after a workout, due to the sweat evaporating quickly (leaving no room for smelly bacteria). Adjust your bathing habits to accommodate for the cold weather’s impact on your body. This is especially important for senior skin. With age, skin rejuvenation processes slow down, and excessive bathing can overly strip the skin of its needed protective oils.
  3. Bathe in warm water. It’s tempting to go for the scalding hot bath to warm up the insides of the body. However, very hot water washes away our valuable skin barrier. Overdoing it, such as using very hot water more than once a day, can start to make you feel raw and sensitive. Tone down the temperature. Wash quickly with hot water if your muscles and organs need it, then turn the water down to a milder warmth. This way, you can get the benefits of boosted circulation and skin protection.
  4. Use a body oil during bathing or after a shower. Reinforcing your skin’s natural barriers with external body oils will help keep your skin ultra healthy through the winter months. Not only will you see a massive reduction in winter aftereffects (like redness, dryness, itching, soreness, cracking, splitting, and more), you’ll find that your skin is just less sensitive to temperature changes.
  5. Protect your nails and lips. Butter up the lips with an occlusive that’s oil or wax-based. Simultaneously, take care of cracking toenails and fingernails by massaging oils deep into the cuticles at least once a week. Toenail tears, hangnails, and chapped lips are just no fun, and they’re very preventable. With a regular treatment, you’ll reduce irritation and feel better.
