How to moisturize dry skin
Dry skin is very common, especially in winter months. It can also be caused by skin conditions, environmental factors or aging. Dry skin can be itchy, uncomfortable, painful and flaky. Keeping dry skin moisturized is very important to avoid skin cracks or becoming infected.
Here some tips to relief and prevent seasonal or chronic dry skin:
- Use warm water rather than too hot water
- Wash with a gentle or fragrance-free cleanser
- Pat your skin gently dry
- Shorten your shower or bath time to 5 to 10 min
- Add moisture to the air around you (use a humidifier to help)
Best moisturizer for dry skin are nutrient rich creams, salves and butters to help trap much needed moisture. Be sure to apply a moisturizer within a few minutes of showering or washing face or hands.
Creams are more effective and less irritating than lotions. Look for creams that include medium absorption oils such as Apricot Kernel, Oatmeal, Jojoba, Shea and Mango butter. Other ingredients that help soothe dry skin include Glycerin, Olive Oil, Cocoa Butter and Meadowfoam oil.
Tip: Keep a non-greasy hand or body moisturizer with you, and apply after each hand washing or itchy sensation. This will help relieve the skin, and help with keeping dry skin moisturized.
